A few days have passed since the news of Lee McQueen's tragic death first broke, and in that time I have written, re-written and then deleted this post several times. It's not that I don't want to acknowledge the loss of such a wonderful, important man or honour his life and achievements - I do, and that is what keeps me coming back; how I've ended up writing these very words over and over again. It would be all too easy to harp on about my own personal sadness at the loss of such a creative genius, the huge gap his passing will leave in the fashion world and what can possibly come next for the Alexander McQueen label, but this all pales in significance when compared to the absolute devastation that his close friends and family must currently be feeling.
Yes, he was one of the very best designers of our time - one who will undoubtedly be remembered and held in high esteem for years to come - but the fashion industry is notoriously fickle and it will move on, perhaps a little too quickly. In the mean time, there are people out there who have lost their son, brother, or very best friend, and who's worlds will never be the same again - my heart goes out to them, and I hope, for their sake, he is allowed to rest in peace.

wonderfully put
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't know exactly what to say either, but you have a very realistic mature take on it. It is sad for the fashion world, but it is ultimately the people who knew him and loved him who really lost someone they loved and not only the great artist as he was to the rest of us.
